Mother Amancio worked as a servant, her father was a railwayman. The boy at the age of thirteen had to work as a messenger in a local shirt store. When Amancio was fourteen, his family goes to La Coruny, the reason for this is the transfer of his father there. There, he became interested in fabrics, engaged in drapery and was able to become an apprentice of one Italian fashion designer.

This fashion designer once told the father of the future magnate of the fashion industry that the tailor from Amancio would not come out, since the tailor should be sociable and light. In the sixties, Amancio managed to become the manager of one store. Having worked for about ten years, he manages to open his own knitwear factory, which he called Confeciones Goa where Goa is the initials of Amansio in the reverse order.

First, a young entrepreneur, together with his first wife Rosalia, sewed women's underwear, night shirts and robes right in his own living room. They had small orders from German partners. However, one of the major orders was canceled. Amancio, who invested all free capital in the order, could lose business, only the opening of his own store could save him. As a result, the family opens a shop called Zorba on the main street of La Korunya.

The store received this name in honor of Anthony Kuinna, the character of the film "Greek Zorba", but the problems that arose forced Amancio to rename it into Zara. The opening of the store was a successful and correct move. A little later, the entrepreneur breaks relations with his first wife. Initially, Amansio opened shops only in Spain. However, the entrepreneur aimed at other countries.

He opens the first foreign store in the Portuguese city of Porto.

Zara is opened in the New York store, and in Paris in Paris.
